Tips for Building a Bond with Your Puppy
Hopefully you've picked up your puppy early in the
morning and plan to be home for at least the first two days. This will give you
some special time to bond with your new pup.
The first few days with your new puppy will set the
stage for your future. You're learning what makes him tick and letting him
know that he can rely on you to care for him.
Take lots of pictures! The
memories of this special time with your new puppy will last a lifetime.
Limit Visitors
Ask neighbors and friends who are anxious to meet your
pup to wait a few days until your dog has had a chance to settle in.
They mean
well and are naturally excited about the new addition to your family, but
you'll want to focus on your dog's needs without having to entertain
company.
Try to stay off the phone too and resist taking on
noisy or complicated home improvement projects for the first few days.
All this
commotion may frighten a young pup and will inhibit your efforts to get to know
your new little four-footed friend.
No Distractions
Turn off the computer and other distractions and take
your pup outdoors for a daily walk and play session.
Talk to your puppy even
sing your favorite song to him so he has a chance to become accustomed to your
voice and begin the bonding process.
Bed Buddies
One of the best ways to build a relationship with your
new pup is to have him sleep in his crate at the side of your bed. He will
inhale your scent and hear every sound you make all night long.
You'll also be
able to hear him if he needs to go outside to eliminate, which helps when trying
to housetrain him.
Besides the fun of just spending time with your new
puppy, the goal of bonding is to have a healthy, happy dog for many years to
come.
